Mark Dismore, Famous Race Car Driver from Greenfield, Indiana

Mark Dismore started racing karts at the tender age of eight in Greenfield, a suburb some fifteen miles due east of Indianapolis. From that interesting beginning, he became one of the famous people in Greenfield by driving in the Indy Racing League, the Toyota Pacific and other auspicious auto racing giants.

Born in 1956, Mark Dismore was active in the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series from 1996 to 2002, and made several commendable showings across the span of his career. In 1989 and 1990, for example, Dismore won championship titles in Formula Atlantics.

Here’s a short video clip of Mark Dismore’s horrific crash during a practice accident at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

In 1991, his career was temporarily put on hold by a head-on crash into the pit wall during a CART practice. The horrific accident cut Dismore’s car in half and left him with a broken neck, along with other injuries.

In 1992, Dismore nevertheless qualified for the Indianapolis 500-mile race (Indy 500), and he ended up driving some 60 races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In 1993, Mark Dismore took home the championship win at the 24 Hours of Daytona, and in 1999, he drove off with a third place in points at the Texas Motor Speedway, his own personal best.

Dismore’s father owned Comet Kart Sales, a Greenfield family karting business from the late 1950s. Mark still goes out on a regular basis and races karts, “to stay sharp.” He says, “It’s more fun than going to the gym.”

These days, Mark Dismore is running his dad’s karting business in Greenfield, as well as another in nearby New Castle, another small Central Indiana city. Perhaps some of his young clients will end up on the list of famous people from Indianapolis and its environs, as he did.
