Greenfield, Indiana residents are fortunate to have at their fingertips a spiffy new addition to Greenfield arts, called the H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts. Created whole cloth out of the former Village Theatre movie house, this facility is a standout for its neo-Art Deco renovation outside and its state-of-the art, technically plush interior spaces.

The building that houses the Ricks Centre for the Arts is a venerable old movie house that once bore the name of Weil Theatre. In 2006, the Ricks Centre was thoroughly remodeled inside and out, employing a checkerboard theme on the interior floors, curved walls and an overall Art Moderne architectural design that stays true to the restoration while projecting a pleasantly modern atmosphere.

A great deal of tech savvy that has gone into planning and carrying out the creation of an excellent performance space, which boasts all the latest lighting and audio instrumentation, as well as a baby grand piano.

The auditorium in the Ricks Centre contains nicely-upholstered seats on a raked floor, and the sound and sightlines offer 100 percent coverage for every audience member. With seating for 386 in the audience, the auditorium stage is a nice size for theatrical and concert productions of most genres, intimate enough to be immediate, yet large enough to feel professional. The Ricks Centre is the home of the Ricks Weil Theatre Company, but the facility primarily operates as a rental facility for all types of performing arts.

Above the auditorium, on the second floor, is the Ricks Centre’s Art Gallery. This excellent space is completely track-lit, and offers ongoing exhibitions of Greenfield art, as well as invited artists from Indianapolis and other cities in Indiana.

Greenfield is only 25 miles outside of Indianapolis, and the Ricks Centre could very well become a force to be reckoned with among Indianapolis performing arts venues and organizations, the Indianapolis arts and Indianapolis theatre community. Though there is a wealth of performance venues in Indianapolis and its immediate environs, Hoosiers never tire of being entertained, and support is widespread and forthcoming. The Ricks Centre for the Arts, in historic downtown Greenfield, is poised to take its place among some of the most distinctive venues of its kind in and around the Circle City.
